Window Glass Repair and Replacement in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES

ORANGE COUNTY

SAN FERNANDO VALLEY

A cracked window isn’t just ugly — it’s a security gap, an energy leak, and a problem that gets worse the longer you wait. Whether it’s a single crack from a stray baseball or foggy dual-pane glass that’s lost its seal, knowing your options saves you time and money.

This guide covers everything LA homeowners need to know about window glass repair and replacement — types of glass, when to repair vs replace, dual-pane considerations, and what the process looks like.

The LA Glass Company has been repairing and replacing residential window glass across LA County since 2008. Gustavo Ramos, our owner, is a 3rd generation glazier and Air Force veteran.

Repair vs. Replace: How to Know Which You Need

When Repair Works

  • Small chips or cracks under 6 inches in non-tempered glass
  • Surface scratches that haven’t penetrated through the glass
  • Single-pane windows where only the glass needs swapping (frame is intact)

When You Need Full Replacement

  • Cracks that span the full pane or radiate from an impact point
  • Foggy dual-pane glass (the seal between panes has failed)
  • Tempered glass that has shattered
  • Frame damage that compromises the glass seat
  • Upgrading from single-pane to dual-pane for energy efficiency

Types of Window Glass We Install

Single-Pane Glass

One layer of glass in the frame. Common in older LA homes (pre-1980s). Affordable to replace but offers minimal insulation and sound reduction.

Dual-Pane (Insulated Glass Units / IGUs)

Two layers of glass with an air or gas-filled space between them. The standard for energy efficiency in modern windows. Reduces heat transfer, lowers energy bills, and blocks more outside noise.

When the seal fails on a dual-pane unit, moisture gets between the panes and creates that foggy, cloudy look. The only fix is replacing the IGU — the full glass unit, not just one pane.

Tempered Safety Glass

Required by California code in certain locations: near doors, in bathrooms, low windows (within 18″ of the floor), and near stairways. We ensure every replacement meets code requirements for your specific window location.

Low-E Glass

Low-emissivity coatings reflect heat while letting light through. Particularly valuable in LA where sun exposure is intense. Low-E glass keeps your home cooler in summer without tinting or darkening your windows.

Laminated Glass

Two layers of glass with a plastic interlayer. Provides impact resistance and significant sound reduction. Popular for homes near freeways, airports, or busy streets in LA.

The Foggy Window Problem — Dual-Pane Seal Failure

This is the most common window glass issue we see in LA homes built after the 1990s. The symptoms:

  • Condensation or fog between the glass panes that won’t wipe away
  • A cloudy, hazy appearance that gets worse over time
  • Visible moisture streaks or water droplets inside the unit

The seal around the edge of the dual-pane unit has failed, allowing humid air inside. Once the seal is broken, it can’t be repaired — the IGU needs to be replaced.

The good news: in most cases, we replace just the glass unit, not the entire window frame. This is significantly less expensive than a full window replacement and maintains your existing frame, trim, and hardware.
