How to Choose the Right Glass Thickness for Your LA Home Project
By The LA Glass Company — Veteran-Owned & 3rd Generation Glass Experts — August 2026
Glass thickness is not one-size-fits-all. The glass that works for a picture frame is dangerous in a shower door. Getting the thickness right means the difference between glass that lasts 30 years and glass that cracks the first time someone leans on it. As a 3rd generation glass glazier serving Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Fernando Valley since 2008, we have cut and installed every thickness from 1/8″ to 1/2″ — and the right choice always depends on application, building code, and load requirements. What Are the Standard Glass Thickness Options?
Glass thickness is measured in fractions of an inch:
- 1/8″ (3mm) — Single-strength. Picture frames, small cabinet doors. Never for windows or doors.
- 3/16″ (5mm) — Thinnest single-pane window glass. Common in older LA homes pre-1980s.
- 1/4″ (6mm) — Double-strength. Standard for single-pane windows, shelves, and custom mirrors. Also the pane thickness in insulated glass units.
- 3/8″ (10mm) — Heavy glass. Entry point for frameless shower doors, railings, and larger table tops.
- 1/2″ (12mm) — Premium. Floor-to-ceiling shower enclosures, large doors, heavy-use table tops, commercial storefronts.
For window glass repair in LA, the most common is 1/4″ tempered or an IGU with two 1/4″ panes. Call 310-736-4374.

When Do You Need Tempered Safety Glass?
California building code requires tempered safety glass where human impact is likely:
- Shower doors — ALL shower glass must be tempered, no exceptions
- Glass doors — Entry, patio, sliding doors, and sidelights within 24″
- Windows near doors — Within 24″ of a door edge
- Windows near floor — Glass within 18″ of the floor
- Stair railings — All glass in guardrail applications
- Wet surfaces — Bathtubs, hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms
Tempered glass is heat-treated to 1,100°F then rapidly cooled — 4-5x stronger than annealed. When it breaks, it crumbles into pebbles, not shards. Our residential glass team never installs annealed where code requires tempered. Call 310-736-4374.

What Glass Thickness for Shower Doors vs. Windows vs. Table Tops?
The right thickness depends entirely on the application:
- Shower doors: 3/8″ minimum frameless, 1/2″ for premium. Both tempered. See our custom shower doors page.
- Windows: 1/4″ per pane in IGU. Most residential IGUs are 7/8″ to 1″ overall. For window glass repair, we match existing thickness.
- Table tops: 1/4″ for small desks, 3/8″ for dining tables, 1/2″ for conference tables and spans over 48″. See glass table tops.
- Mirrors: 1/4″ standard for custom mirrors. Gym mirrors: 1/4″ tempered.
- Shelves: 1/4″ light display, 3/8″ kitchen, 1/2″ heavy loads. Tempered if above shoulder height.

FAQ
Q: Can I use regular glass instead of tempered to save money?
A: Not where code requires it. Using non-tempered glass in a shower door, sidelight, or low window creates a serious laceration risk. The cost difference is modest.
Q: How do I know if my existing glass is tempered?
A: Look for a small etched mark in one corner. A glass pro can also check using polarized light to reveal the stress pattern.
Q: Why are my double-pane windows foggy between the glass?
A: The IGU seal has failed. Moisture entered the airspace. The unit cannot be repaired — glass must be replaced. Contact us for window glass repair.
Q: Can glass be cut to size on site?
A: Annealed glass yes. Tempered glass no — it must be cut before tempering. Any attempt to cut tempered glass shatters it instantly.
Q: Best glass thickness for soundproofing?
A: Laminated glass with PVB interlayer outperforms monolithic glass. IGUs with dissimilar pane thicknesses block different frequencies.
Q: Does thicker glass insulate better?
A: Not meaningfully. Insulation comes from the air gap and Low-E coatings, not glass thickness.
